Snag some peaceful moments in General Conference with this hands-on Activity Packet for your kiddos! And don’t miss the Special 2020 Edition Add-on available in the downloads below! 😂
Family traditions are a big thing in my family. They just make everything a bit more special. Some of our favorite traditions come twice a year when our church holds what is called ‘General Conference’. It is an opportunity for the whole world to sit at the feet of the prophets and apostles to hear the messages the Lord wants us to hear.
If you have been praying or searching for more peace and understanding in your life (I’m pretty sure that’s just about everyone this year!!), I whole heartedly encourage you to JOIN US on the first weekends in every April and October (this upcoming conference is on October 3rd and 4th) to feel the love that our Father in Heaven has for you and the peace and direction He can offer. Heaven knows we need that right now.

Conference Weekend Traditions
Conference Weekend is a special time, full of the heavenly smells of homemade cinnamon rolls and special foods being baked, uplifting music coursing through the air, and the happy sights of fun crafts and activities that we reserve for this special time of year. The kids are always so excited. It’s like a mini-Christmas, but without the presents. 😉
But even with all the excitement and anticipation, if you’ve got little ones at home, General Conference can be a little tricky. There are four general sessions that are each two hours long, and by golly… that is a long time for them to sit quietly and just listen! I’m not sure I’ve met a kid alive that can sit still through that without some assistance! Mine sure don’t have that kind of self-discipline… and they’re pretty darn good kids! 😉 Hence, one of the traditions we make sure to include each year is some sort of fun activity packet for the kids!
Conference Activity Packets
When I pick a general conference activity packet, I try to make sure that in addition to helping the kids stay ‘busy’, it will also help them to pay attention to the actual conference. I’m not naive enough to think that their attention spans will hold for a full two hours at each session. But if they can be engaged in an activity that will occasionally draw their focus back to the speakers and what is being said, I consider that a win.
Sometimes I find packets from other creative designers that I like. But most years I have ended up making my own. My ‘Ultimate LDS General Conference Packets‘ (which I created when I was blogging at Food Storage and Beyond, but are also available HERE), have been a huge hit. My two oldest daughters particularly enjoyed them. But now that my two sons are old enough to be paying attention, I’m finding they have different activity needs. They prefer less of a ‘color, cut & paste’ type of activity to more of a ‘hands-on’ type. So this year my brain has been geared towards an activity packet that will fit that bill.
“Conference Catastrophe” Activity Packet
And SOOO…. I present to you… the fully hands-on “Conference Catastrophe” Activity Packet! (*insert maniacle fanfare and wooping here* WOOOHOOO!! 🤣)
This fun conference activity packet is all about keeping little hands busy building things, while also encouraging their minds to ponder questions related to faith, testimony, and the messages being shared.
It’s a pretty self-explanatory little packet. But basically, the premise is this: it’s Conference time and you’re getting ready to listen, but so many crazy things keep happening to cause a problem! The kids get to be the superheroes that solve the problems by building a solution! They can use play-doh, legos, blocks… whatever your child enjoys building with. Or they can even draw and color the solutions if they’re a budding artist! There’s even a fun superhero mask for them to decorate and wear so they can get into their role and save the day! 😝
At the bottom of each ‘catastrophe card’ is a question for them to think about and answer. I know my son doesn’t enjoy writing and would just as soon skip this part. But these questions are really what gets them tuning in to the messages of Conference. So there will be incentives for my kids to answer those questions! 😉 But obviously, if a child cannot write yet, just skip the questions. Or you can save them to discuss at another time!
Incentives
One of my favorite ways to provide ‘incentives’ for the kids is with ‘Conference Pennies’ and the ‘Conference Store’. They earn pennies by either listening reverently, completing different activities, or answering those questions on their ‘catastrophe cards’ 😁. They can then redeem those pennies at the ‘store’ for fun treats and toys. We make the rule that they can only redeem their pennies during conference breaks so as not to disrupt a talk.
But however you choose to be active in the conference weekend, it is always my hope that our greatest focus will be on our Savior, Jesus Christ. He leads us in these latter days. He is our anchor and source of peace in these crazy times. I truly pray that we will all be able to feel that love and peace, and that you will be able to enjoy the upcoming messages. And hopefully this packet will help. 😉
Oh… and JUST BECAUSE it’s 2020 (no explanation needed, right??!) I’m adding a SPECIAL EDITION of ‘Conference Catastrophe’! It’s 6 extra cards full of catastrophes specific to this fantastic year that we just never want to forget! 🤣 Don’t forget to download your add-on! I hope you’re all surviving this insane year.
Blessings to you all!
